Colored Die Springs

Colored Die Springs - mold springs - are heavy-duty rectangular-wire compression springs built for stamping dies, injection molds and fixtures, where thousands of cycles per hour leave no room for force loss or spring set. Compared with round-wire springs, the rectangular section stores more energy in the same pocket and keeps the force nearly linear over a long working stroke, which is exactly what a stripper or ejector needs. The springs carry a durable colored epoxy coating, and the color identifies the load class (light, medium, heavy, extra-heavy) [TBC], so a maintenance engineer selects a replacement by color without measuring. Common colors include blue, red, green, yellow, orange, white and black, as shown in the photos. They are coiled from alloy spring steel, heat treated and shot peened for long fatigue life at high stress; closed end coils seat flat and perpendicular in the spring pocket, and dimensions follow ISO/FD and JIS mold-spring standards [TBC], so they drop into existing die designs without modification. Two rules keep die springs alive. First, stay within roughly 25 to 30 percent deflection of the free length and never exceed the maximum compression allowed for the class, or the spring takes a set and loses force. Second, in high-cycle dies replace springs as a complete set rather than one at a time, and keep pocket depth clean of debris that eats working stroke. Load-deflection curves are tested per batch, bagged packing is available for direct delivery to the tool room, and special free lengths can be cut and re-ended on request. Ordering die springs is easiest by the color system: tell us the color (load class), the bore or rod diameter and the free length, and we quote directly. Where an existing die is being re-serviced, send one old spring - we identify the class, measure free length and compression set, and propose either a same-size replacement or a one-class upgrade if the die has been running hot. Springs that have taken a set cannot be restored; they must be replaced, which is why the 25 to 30 percent deflection rule matters so much in daily die maintenance. Standard lengths are in stock for common colors and diameters, so replacements ship in days; special lengths are cut and re-ended in our workshop without losing the class rating [TBC]. Packing is designed for the tool room: individually bagged springs carry a color and size label, and cartons can be sorted by class so the maintenance shelf is organized before the box is even opened.
