Compression Springs

Compression Springs resist axial load and return to their free length when the load is removed, which makes them the default choice wherever a mechanism needs a push, a preload or a cushion. This series covers cylindrical helical compression springs in stainless steel and high-carbon spring steel, together with conical and volute springs whose tapering coils telescope into each other at full compression. The cylindrical type gives a linear, predictable spring rate - the number designers need for switch force, valve seating or preload calculation. The conical type behaves differently: the spring rate increases progressively with deflection and the solid height is extremely low, because the coils nest inside one another, which solves the classic space problem in return mechanisms, clutches and buffers. Both types are coiled on CNC spring machines from SUS302 / SUS304 / SUS316 stainless wire or high-carbon spring steel wire [TBC], then stress relieved to stabilize free length and rate. Ends are closed, or closed and ground for perpendicular seating in a pocket; wire diameter, outside diameter, free length and active coils are produced to specification. Selecting the right spring needs four numbers: load at working height, travel, available space and required life. Where space is tight we will quote both a cylindrical and a conical option so you can compare. Load-deflection testing is run on every batch, fatigue testing is available for springs under continuous stroke, and surface finishes include black oxide, zinc plating and electropolishing [TBC]. Applications include electronics, motors, computers, autos, bicycles, hardware tools, toys, switches and valves, with packing in bags, boxes or bulk cartons. A few production details are worth knowing when ordering. Ends can be closed, or closed and ground - ground ends seat flat in a pocket and keep the load centered, which matters for switches and valves; for general pushing applications closed ends are cheaper and sufficient. Free length tolerance is held tightly because it defines the installed preload; rate is verified on a load-deflection tester and reported per batch. For stainless springs in humid or outdoor products, SUS304 is the standard choice, SUS316 for marine or chemical environments [TBC]. Long springs are packed in tubes to prevent tangling, standard sizes in bags of 500 or 1,000 with part number and rate marked on the label.
